Space Age Love Song

He stared at the farm property. He knew that she would come here. Where else was she going to go? Kat needed to come home. He was going to do whatever it took to do that. The man straightened up and his shades and climbed out of the car. He wished himself luck.

Muriel looked left and right.

“Can I just leave now?” she asked.

“Yes,” William said.

“No,” the old biddies were quick to say at once. Muriel had a nervous look on her face. She quickly looked to her left and her right. Liz and Clover’s grandma looked at all of the old biddies.

“Who are all of you again?” she asked.

“Friends,” Aisha said. “Just friends.”

“Who were just about to leave,” William said.

“No,” the leader said. “We’re here to help me with you.” The old lady and the nieces looked confused.

“What does that mean?” she asked.

“Nothing!” William said. “They were about to leave!” Clover frowned.

“But she can’t,” she said. Everyone looked at her.

“I was going to make dinner for everyone,” she said. Clyde’s head perked up.

“Ooo, what are we havin’?” she asked. Aisha kicked her under the table.

“Ow!” Clyde whimpered.

“Cut it out,” the leader hissed. She turned back to the sisters.

“We would be honored to stay for dinner,” Aisha said. The other old biddies and William all stared at her, frowning. Clover’s eyes lit up.

“Great!” she said. “I’ll get started right now.” She hummed as she walked into the kitchen. Everyone glared at the leader. Aisha shrugged at her.

“What?” she asked. They just glared at her.

Tucker stood at the doorway of the Sunny Plum. He looked at his watch.

“You coming yet?” Tucker asked.

“Hold on! Can’t you give me one minute?” Annie asked. Her husband sighed and rolled her eyes. Did she always have to do this when they were about to go somewhere? He pressed his head against the glass.

“We’re going to be late!” Tucker shouted. “I don’t want our table to be taken!”

“Hang on!” his wife shouted. “I’ll be there in a minute!” Tucker threw back his head and groaned.

“Really?” he muttered to himself.

“What?” Annie asked. Tucker shook his head to himself.

Moments later, Annie came out to the café part of their home. She had a on Sunday dress with her hair done up in bun. Tucker looked up, dropping his shoulders.

“How do I look?” his wife asked.

“Good,” he said. “Now can we go?” Annie stuck up her nose in the air.

“Yeah, yeah,” she said. Tucker held out his hand. She took it and they went out the door.

The man walked up to Lewis’ front door. He held his breath and rang the bell.

“Coming,” Kat said. He stepped back and waited. He already had the words that he wanted to say. She had to come back to him. The man looked up when he saw the door open. Kat stood at the doorway as the glow drained from her face.

“Oh…” she said. He broke into a huge grin.

“Hey baby,” he said. Kat tried to close the door in his face, but he grabbed onto it as fast as he could.

“Hey! Stop!” she yelled.

“Just let me in!” he said.

“No!” Kat shouted. They struggled until he got inside.

Everyone had their eyes on Clover in the kitchen.

“Why do you make that child do all of the cooking?” her grandmother asked.

“She’s not a child anymore,” William said under his breath.

“What?” the old lady asked. The old man shook his head.

“I don’t mind it, grandma,” Clover said. “I love to cook.”

“Oh,” her grandma said.

“See?” William asked. Clover turned off the stove.

“Food’s ready,” she said. Everyone sat up at the table, waiting to eat.
