Moonlight Shadow

Clyde leaned against the fence, smiling. She stared at Nicholas’ house. Any minute now…

The door creaked open. Clyde stood up straight. Nicholas walked outside and closed the door. Kay waved at him from the window.  He blew a kiss at her.

“See you tonight!” the man called. He turned to head for work for the day. But then, he froze in his tracks.

“Oh no…” he muttered. Clyde broke into a huge grin.

“Hiii!” she said. Nicholas backed up to the door.

“No, no, no,” he said. The dirty old biddy jumped over the fence and landed on her face.

“Ow,” she muttered to herself. Clyde jumped to her feet, grinning.

“Hey, baby!” she shouted. “Did you miss me?” By now, Nicholas was looking for a way to escape the crazy woman. Why did they have to do this every morning? Clyde lunged forward and hugged him wildly. He tried to push her off.

“Get off of me! Let go!” the man shouted. Clyde wouldn’t let up. She held on, laughing. Nicholas tried to push her off.

“Come on, I have to work,” he said. “Get off!” The man managed to push her off at last. She looked up at him with puppy dog eyes. Nicholas wrinkled his nose as he frowned.

“What is wrong with you?” he asked. She broke into a huge grin.

“I love you,” she said. Nicholas rolled his eyes.

“I don’t have time for this,” he muttered under his breath. The man walked past her to work. Clyde stood up and blew him a kiss.

“See you when you get home!” she shouted. Nicholas forced himself to speed away as fast as he could.

Gloria made her way to the Sunny Plum Café.

“Good morning!” she said, pushing the door open. Annie and Tucker looked up.

“Morning,” Annie said.

“I noticed that you have a now hiring sign in the window,” Gloria said. “Are you still looking for help?” The couple froze and looked at each other.

“Yes…” Tucker said. Gloria’s eyes lit up.

“Can I get a job here?” she asked, Annie and Tucker looked at each other again.

“Are you sure you want to go do that?” Annie asked.

“Yes!” the other woman said. The couple nervously laughed. Gloria raised her eyebrow.

“Is something wrong?” she asked.

“Uh… no, no. no,” Tucker said. “Sure, you can help us for the day!” His wife whipped her head around with big eyes. The man shrugged. Gloria clapped her hands together.

“Yay!” she said. “I won’t let you down!” Annie smacked Tucker on the arm.

“Ow,” he whispered.

“What the heck?” she mouthed at him. Her husband shrugged.

“Are you okay?” Gloria asked.

“Yes!” the couple were quick to say. The other woman broke into a big grin. Annie and Tucker kind of chuckled.

Aisha, Muriel, Clyde, and Lewis sat on a grassy hill. The leader look at her friends.

“So what are we doing today?” she asked.

“Nothing,” the other three said. Aisha frowned and folded her arms across her chest.

“That’s not good enough,” she said. Her friends groaned.

“Do we always have to do something?” Muriel asked. “Can’t we just relax for once?”

“No,” Aisha said. Lewis threw back her head and groaned. Muriel happened to look down the hill and notice something out of place.

“Hey, isn’t that William?” she asked. Her friends looked down. The old man was walking around at the foot of the hill. He had his hands behind head.

“It is,” Aisha said. Clyde waved her arm in the air.

“Oi! Billy!” she shouted. The leader got ready to hit her in the head. Clyde ducked out of the way in time. Aisha fell forward. Lewis and Muriel laughed to themselves. Aisha sat up scowling. William stopped and looked up. He marched up the hill. The old biddies sat up.

“Hey,” William said when he got close enough. The old biddies noticed the look on his face.

“What’s the matter, Bill?” Lewis asked. He shoved his hands into his pockets.

“That old lady is going to be the death of me,” William said.

“That bad, huh?” Muriel asked.

“Yeah,” he said. He looked down at the grass dancing in the wind. Right away, Aisha started a new plan.

“I can help you,” she said. Muriel, Lewis, and Clyde looked her with big eyes.

“You mean it?” William asked.

“Yes,” Aisha said, nodding. Her friends made a face as they knew what was coming next.
