The Flat Earth

Not much goes on in Brit-Wales. When it does, everyone knows it. This is about one of those times. It all started with Kat’s ex.

For the past three days, Lewis had been keeping Jerry out. (She thinks that’s his name. She didn’t ask Kat.) So far, she had been doing such a good job. However, she wasn’t fast enough one morning.

Lewis awoke to hear shouting. She rolled over in her bed at first, thinking it was part of her dreaming. But the shouting didn’t stop.

“Huh?” Lewis asked half-awake. She dragged herself out of bed and wandered down to the source of the sound. When she got to the living room, her face dropped.

“Oh…” she said in a monotone voice. Kat stood in front of a young man dressed like he was going to a disco. She whipped around to face her aunt. She had tears streaming down her face.

“Oh…” the farmer said again. This was awkward. Now what?

Lewis wasn’t the only one dealing with an annoying ex who wouldn’t take no for an answer. William was asleep on the couch when heard a knock on his door. He gritted his teeth. Don’t let it be who he thought it was.

The man sat up and walked over to the door. He looked through the peephole. William frowned. Seriously? He opened the door a crack.

“What are you doing here?” the old man asked.

“Uh… Is Lizzy there?” the young man asked.

“No, go away!” William shouted. He started to close the door, but Liz’s ex reached for the door.

“Hey!” the old man shouted.

“Please just let me see her!” the ex shouted.

“No! Get out of here!” William yelled as he struggled to close the door.

“Please? Look, just want to say I’m sorry,” the young man pleaded.

“Go out of here or I will call the police!” the older man shouted.

“Please?!”

“No!”

“Please?! Just let me in!”

“No!”

“Uncle?” a voice asked behind William. The old man turned around. Clover was standing in the doorway. Her uncle frowned. Oh great.

“Lizzy is that you?” the young man asked. “Lizzy? Lizzy?” He managed to push the door open and go inside. And now he was in the house.

Annie and Tucker stood behind the counter on another slow day. This was the third time this week.

“How bad is it?” Annie whispered.

“How should I know?” Tucker whispered back. They stared at three-fourths of the old biddies at the table. The three old ladies were sitting around quiet.

“It’s your turn,” Annie whispered. Her husband turned to her.

“What? Why me?!” he whispered. Annie narrowed her eyes.

“You always make me go over and talk to them,” she said. “You do it.” Tucker started to open his mouth but closed it when she glared at him. The man threw up his hands in the air.

“Fine, I’ll do it,” he said. The man came from behind the counter.

Aisha, Muriel, and Clyde looked up when they heard the footsteps coming toward their table. Tucker had an awkward look on his face.

“Hello, ladies,” he said. “How is everything today?” That just sounded so forced. He seemed to force himself to smile. The old biddies didn’t speak at first.

“Fine,” Aisha said. “Everything is fine.” Clyde and Muriel nodded. Tucker started to frown a little bit.

“Where’s Lewis?” he asked.

“At ‘ome,” Clyde said. “Kat’s there.” Tucker’s frown deepened.

“She’s still over there?” he asked.

“Yeah, the old biddies said.

“It’s that bad, huh?” Tucker asked. Annie rolled her eyes behind the counter. Still, this was a little bit better than what he did in the past. She rubbed her forehead.

“This will have to do for now,” Annie said to herself. She got started on making the tea.

“Yeah,” Muriel said with a nod. No actually, it was about to get worse.

“Why is he here?!” Kat cried. Lewis stared at her niece and her ex in discomfort.

“Damn it, I thought I kept him away,” she muttered to herself. Kat’s eyes widened.

“You knew that he’s been trying to talk to me?!” she shouted.

“You weren’t supposed to be listening to me while I’m talking to myself,” Lewis said. Her niece looked like she was ready to scream. Tears started to roll down her cheeks. The farmer threw back her head and groaned. This just kept getting worse, didn’t it? Meanwhile, the young man stood around looking confused.

“Uh…” he said.

“Shut up!” aunt and niece said in unison. The ex drew his mouth closed. Lewis sighed. Time for some damage control. Where was Aisha when she needed her?
