Sun Star Ball

Noiz frowned as she looked at the mirror. It didn’t feel right to wear western clothes against. Now, the long black dress wasn’t ugly. The long black and silver looked great on her. It was just…

Noiz forced herself to grin in the mirror. She hadn’t expected to go out tonight. It was a last minute invitation in fact. The call came early in the morning. Noiz mumbled to herself as she pawed around on her nightstand.

“Hello?” she asked.

“Oh Noiz!” a familiar voice said. A confused look came over her face.

“Damon?” she asked.

“How have you been?” he asked.

“Good… What’s on your mind?” the kitty asked. Damon chuckled for a second.

“Damon?” Noiz asked. There was a pause. “Hello? Are you still there? Hello? Hello?”

“Oh yeah, sorry about that,” he said. “The cat demanded my attention. Anyway, I need your help.”

“With what?” Noiz asked. He chuckled nervously a bit.

“You see, there is a ball happening at the Sun Star Club tonight and my date dropped out this morning,” Damon said. Noiz tilted her head.

“What happened?” she asked.

“It’s a long story,” he said. “But…” The kitty slowly pieced it together.

“Are you asking me to look for a date for you?” she asked.

“No, no, no, no!” he was quick to say. “I am asking you out tonight.” Noiz about fell out of her bed.

“What?!” she shouted.

“No?” he asked. Noiz quickly shook her head.

“No, no, no, no!” she shouted. “It’s fine! I’ll go with you!”

“Great! Thank you so much!” Damon said. “I will pick you up at six.” He hung up before the kitty could say a word. Noiz stared at her phone.

Now here she was.

“I look like I’m twelve years old,” Noiz said to herself. Suddenly, her phone rang.

“Hello?” the kitty asked.

“Are you ready?” Damon asked on the other line. Noiz’s face turned bright red.

“Yes!” she yelped. “I will be right down.” The kitty hung up and stuffed her phone into her purse. She hurried down the stairs. Damon sat in his car in her driveway. He rolled down the window and waved at her. Noiz hurried down to the passenger’s side. Her date climbed out and walked around to her side of the car.

“Good evening,” he said. Damon unlocked the door. Noiz climbed in with a smile on her face. He closed the door after her. The kitty blushed as he climbed into the driver’s side.

“Ready to go?” he asked. She slowly nodded.

“Alright,” he said. Damon put his car in reverse and pulled out of the driveway.

They looked like a rich couple walking up to the club’s doors. Noiz looked rather out of place. She couldn’t understand why she was here.

“Hey Damon,” she said.

“Hm?” he asked. Noiz shifted in place for a moment.

“Why exactly did you think of me for your date?” she asked. “I mean, I’m not complaining but…”

“But?” he asked.

“It feels… kind of…” Noiz said. “Surreal.” There was a pause between them. Damon calmly smiled as he put his arm around her shoulders.

“It’s because I can trust you,” he said.

“Huh?” What does that mean?” Noiz asked. Damon just patted her on the head as he walked her to the front door. The kitty forced herself to smile. The bouncer perked up and saw them. Damon gave him a small voice.

“Cummings, party of two,” he said. The bouncer moved aside and let them in.

“Thank you,” Damon said. He bowed his head and walked by. Noiz did the same.

The inside made her feel even more out of place. The decoration was covered in black and white. Everyone was dressed up like they were going to an actual ball. So many dresses and suits around them. The white diamond chandelier cast rainbow lights around the room like a disco ball. Noiz had never seen a dance floor look so silver before in her life. A DJ was working away at his booth, playing popular Western music. The bartender was busy serving drinks. Fancy snacks begged to be eaten. The guests were dancing, drinking, and chatting with each other. There wasn’t much of a Japanese person in sight. Noiz turned to Damon with a stunned look on her face.

“They’re all foreigners,” she said.

“Yes,” he said. “It’s a party for the foreigners in the industry.” Noiz stared with big eyes.

“I see,” she said. Damon stepped forward and held out his hand.

“Care for a dance, my dear?” he asked. Noiz’s cheeks turned bright red.

“Uh… sure!” she said. Damon smiled and took her by the hand. The couple got lost in the upbeat pop music around them. The kitty had a dreamy look in her eyes throughout the first song.
