Riders in the Sky

Lewis rubbed her forehead in the library.

“Why?! Why would she do this?!” she asked. Muriel rubbed her on the back.

“Please don’t touch,” the farmer said. Muriel drew back her hands.

“Sorry,” she whispered. Her friend waved her off.

“There’s not much you can do,” Aisha said. “How many times has she broken up with him?”

“I don’t know,” Lewis complained. She leaned back in her chair.

“Well… how many do you think it is?” the leader asked. The farmer narrowed her eyes at her.

“Are you kidding?” she asked. Aisha put up her hands.

“Okay, fair point,” she said.

“’Ow many guys ‘as it been?” Clyde asked as she looked at the horse races in the newspaper. Aisha shot her a cold glare.

“Can’t you have some tact?” she asked. The dirty old biddy looked up at her, wrinkling her nose.

“Eh?” she asked. Aisha sighed and rubbed her temples.

“You are impossible,” she said.

“What?” Clyde asked.

“I don’t know,” Lewis answered. “I don’t keep track anymore.”

“Oh,” the dirty old biddy said in a flat tone.

“What will you do now?” Muriel asked. Lewis turned to her, frowning.

“I don’t know,” she said. She threw back her head and groaned again.

It looked like it was going to be a quiet day on this Friday. Gloria wandered around in her far-sighted state. She was going somewhere. The old woman hummed to herself as she kept bumping into things.

Annie and Tucker watched her from inside the Sunny Plum.

“Should we go get her?” Annie asked.

“I guess…” her husband said. He turned to see her staring at him.

“What?” he asked. Annie didn’t say a word. Tucker shook his head.

“Oh no,” he said. “I’m not doing it again!” His wife stared at him. The man shook his head.

“Uh-uh,” he said. “I won’t do it. Nope!”

“Well, I’m not going to do it,” Annie said. “You do it!”

“Why do I have to get her?” Tucker asked. While the couple argued behind the counter, Gloria looked up at the Sunny Plum from across the street. She jogged across the street and slammed into the glass door. The couple jerked their heads upwards.

“I’ve got this,” Tucker said. He ran out to help the far-sighted woman into the café. Annie got to work making the tea.

Lewis was going to need some outside help. Her friends were no use. She needed someone to share her misery. The farmer walked up to William’s door and knocked. She managed to slip away from Muriel’s house while the old biddies were talking. Okay, Lewis said that she was going to step out for a moment. She doubted they were really listening.

The farmer looked up when the door opened. William poked his head outside. He raised his eyebrow.

“Lewis?” he asked.

“My niece is getting back with her ex,” she blurted out. There was a pause.

“Oh,” he said at last. The farmer cocked her head.

“How is Liz doing?” she asked. William sighed and dropped his shoulders.

“I can’t get her ex to leave,” he said. There came another pause.

“Can I come in?” Lewis asked.

“Yes,” he was quick to say. He moved aside to let her in.

“Cheers,” the farmer said. She hurried inside. William looked left and right before closing the door behind her.
