New World Man

His name was Michael. He could do Johnny Rotten proud. He sat on the couch, scratching himself. The young man snorted. Muriel and William watched him from the kitchen.

“Is that him?” she asked.

“Yeah,” he whispered. Muriel turned to see Michal seemingly chewing on something. He looked around the room while doing so. The old biddy gave the young man a strange look.

“Where did Liz find him?” she asked. William shrugged and shook his head.

“So… why am here?” she asked. The old man shifted his eyes away from her.

“Well…” he said. Muriel cocked her head.

“You just don’t want to be alone with him, do you?” she asked. William mumbled something under his breath.

“What was that?” she asked. He gave her a blank stare.

“Huh?” William asked. Muriel was about to speak when they heard someone say, “Who’s there?” The two old people looked up to see Michael staring at them. Oh crap…

“Who are you?” he asked. William and Muriel stepped out with no way out.

“Uh… hi,” Muriel said. “I’m Muriel and I live next door.” Michael didn’t say a word. He snorted as he raised his eyebrow. Muriel turned to William. He shrugged and shook his head with a goofy grin. The old biddy threw back her head and sighed. Suddenly, the door opened.

“Muriel?” Aisha asked. The old biddy froze.

“What now?” she asked. Muriel turned to see her friends walking into William’s house.

Liz walked into the Sunny Plum.

“Good morning!” she cheered. Annie and Tucker stood behind the counter and perked up.

“Liz!” Tucker said. “How are you doing?” She walked up to the counter.

“I’m good,” she said with a smile on her face. “You?” Annie sighed.

“It’s stressful,” she said.

“Her sister is coming today,” Tucker whispered.

“Oh…” Liz said.

“Hi Liz!” Gloria said behind her. The younger woman turned around.

“Oh, hi Gloria,” she said. The older woman smiled.

“How’s your sister?” she asked.

“Good,” Liz said. “How have you been doing?” Gloria smiled with her empty cup in her hand.

“Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful!” she said. Annie tried to stay smiling when Gloria started talking.

“What can we do for you today?” Tucker asked.

“I’m here to pick up some scones for take out,” Liz said.

“Oh,” Annie said once she relaxed. “You aren’t staying?”

“No, I’m expecting someone today,” the young woman said. The couple looked at each for a moment. Tucker started to put the scones in a bag.

“Who, if you don’t mind me asking?” Annie asked. Liz broke out into a huge grin.

“My boyfriend,” she said. Gloria whipped her head around. Annie’s jaw dropped. Tucker dropped his tongs on the floor.

“What?!” they all yelled.

“Another one?” Annie asked. Liz giggled and stuck out her tongue.

Aisha walked up to the coffee table. Michael tilted his head.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I could ask you the same thing,” Aisha said. Muriel and William were sweating now.

“That’s Liz’s boyfriend,” Muriel asked. The leader turned her head with wide eyes.

“What?!” she asked. Clyde walked up to the young man.

“Why ya ‘air spikey like tat?” she asked as she patted Michael on the top of his head. He tried to dodge her hand.

“Stop!” he said. Aisha pointed at the annoyed young man.

“This guy?” she asked. William and Muriel slowly nodded. The leader turned back to Michael as Clyde still tried to pat him like a cat. Aisha wrinkled her nose.

“Why?” she asked. William shrugged and shook his head. Lewis stood looking confused.

“Wait, what’s going on now?” she asked. Muriel was about to speak when they heard the door open again.

“Hello?” they heard a woman asked. Everyone looked up to see Clover walking into the house with groceries in her hand. She looked at each of the old biddies. A puzzled look came over her face.

“What is everyone doing here?” she asked. Everyone looked at each other as they tried to come up with something to say.
